Herbst appliance

Herbst appliance is irremovable orthodontic device that corrects malocclusion

The Herbst appliance is used with those patients who are diagnosed with the lower jaw in a backward position (i.e., a small lower jaw). Treatment with the Herbst appliance is typically applied during the intensive growth period between ages 12 and 14, as well as with adult patients. The Herbst appliance is an alternative to orthognathic surgery, especially if a patient doesn’t want to change their facial appearance and only correct the occlusion.

I’ve been using this method of treating patients since 2004. I also defended my doctoral theses on this subject.

The Herbst appliance is an effective tool for treating complicated Class II anomalies (i.e.,, small lower jaw and protrusive of the upper teeth). About 30% of all orthodontic patients are diagnosed with Class II anomalies. It means that the Herbst appliance is incredibly important to an orthodontic practice.

So far, we’ve treated about 600 patients with the Herbst appliance. This method has become more popular in Eastern and Western Europe.

I am very happy to be able to share my knowledge with other doctors by giving lectures on treatment with the Herbst appliance.
