Treatment with braces

Treatment with braces is a treatment with an irremovable orthodontic device that is used to straighten teeth and treat anomalies of occlusion.

For orthodontic treatment, external and internal (lingual) braces are used. If the treatment is planned correctly, a good and stabile result is achieved no matter which kind of braces are used.

External braces

External braces, according their aesthetic appeal, are divided into two categories:

  • regular ( metal, titanium) braces;
  • aesthetic (ceramic) braces.

Modern aesthetic braces do not change their color and have low friction.  This is why the treatment period isn‘t longer than using metal braces. External braces, based on fixation to an orthodontic wire, are categorized into self-ligating and regular.

In contrary to what commercial flyers and websites claim, scientific research does not show that treatment with self-ligating braces is faster or more convenient to the patient than treatment with regular braces. Self-ligating braces have lesser movement control than regular braces and their only advantage is that the visit to the doctor is typically shorter. Visits to the doctor during treatment must be as frequent as when treating with regular braces (on average once every six weeks).

Lingual (internal) braces

Lingual braces are divided into these categories:

  • standard;
  • individual.

Lingual braces are harder to clean properly and they are more expensive than external braces. Lingual braces aren‘t noticeable, but getting used to them is harder than to external ones, as they obstruct speaking function more.

Your orthodontist will help you choose the correct type of braces according to your needs and the complexity of the case.
