Recommendations

  • Aligners must be worn all the time.  Optimal wearing time is ~22 hours a day.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Aligner sets are being changed every 10 days.  The time of such change is established by the orthodontist.  Old (used) aligners must be placed in a certain bag.
  • Always start removing aligners from the back teeth first, and put them on starting with front teeth.  Don’t bite while putting them on.  Once aligners are placed, make sure they are on firmly and pressing well against the teeth.  Press with your fingers to the mastic surface of the teeth.

  • Very important! The new aligner is always placed on at night time.  It is recommended that the new aligner stay on for 6 to 7 hours before removing it, because first movement is taking place at that time and it is being fixed.
  • When starting a new aligner, set teeth might feel sensitive.

             WRONG PLACEMENT:                           USE A CHEW:                             RIGHT PLACEMENT:

  • During the first weeks of treatment, sensitivity of the oral membrane might occur after removing the aligners, and some sores may appear.  It that case, rinse mouth with warm salty water (1 teaspoon salt in ½ glass of water) or in watered down antiseptic mouthwash.
  • After starting the treatment, it is not recommended to fill teeth, because aligners might not fit.  If such urgency occurs, the orthodontist must be informed and the procedure must be discussed with your doctor.
  • It is important to watch if the attachments from the teeth didn’t fall off.  If there is a rise on the alignment, there must be an attachment on the teeth in its place.  If you notice one missing, contact the orthodontist.
  • If an aligner gets lost or is broken, contact the orthodontist.

TAKING CARE OF ALIGNERS

  • During treatment avoid food containing high pigmentation (such as blueberries, cherries etc.), because they might cause aligners to change color, even after brushing teeth.
  • Before placing new aligners on, clean them properly: wash your hands with soap, clean aligners with the brush from top and bottom; later on, wash aligners under the running water.
  • After meal or snack wash aligners under cool running water. Don’t forget to wash the box as well.
  • Do not drink hot drinks or wash aligners under hot water, because they might change their shape.
  • Do not chew gum with aligners on.
  • To take care of aligners, use toothbrush and toothpaste without abrasive materials, such as aluminum oxide, calcium carbonate, or calcium phosphate (can be found in whitening tooth pastes).  Rinse under running water;
  • To clean aligners Corega Bio Formula disinfectant tablets can be used.
    o Place one Corega Bio Formula disinfectant tablet in warm (not hot) water so that aligners would submerge.
    o After 3 minutes clean aligners with soft brush.
    o Rinse aligners under warm running water and pour out the solution right away after use.
  •  Hydrogen peroxide can be used as well (available at the drug store).
    o Pour hydrogen peroxide into glass of warm water ( 50/50);
    o Keep aligners in solution for 20 min;
    o Clean aligners with soft brush;
    o Rinse aligners under warm running water and pour out the solution right away after use.

ORAL HYGIENE DURING TREATMENT WITH ALIGNERS

  • It’s not allowed to eat meals with aligners on. Only drinking warm water or drink is allowed. Drinks that have color in them must be drunk through a straw.
  • Before eating or drinking coffee (except water), you have to take off aligners.
  • After meals or snacks brush teeth with toothpaste and toothbrush, chew gum, or rinse mouth with water/mouthwash.
  • Brush teeth as usual, using toothpaste, toothbrush and dental floss.
  • While brushing teeth or eating or drinking coffe, place aligner in to watered-down mouthwash.  It helps to prevent a bad smell.
  • Don’t forget to clean the surface of the tongue when brushing teeth.
  • During oral hygiene procedure inform your hygienist about treatment with Invisalign aligners, so that attachment wouldn’t get damaged.

OTHER USEFUL RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Some aligners might have sharp edges.  In that case, use orthodontic wax or file the corner with a soft nail file.
  • Do not place aligners on a table or in your pocket, as they might easily break.  Keep them in a box and away from pets.
