Orthodontic treatment of Children

Orthodontic treatment of Children: treatment of early age occlusion problems

This treatment is needed when occlusion problems appear at an early age together with bad habits of children, such as sucking fingers or blankets, biting nails, etc. These problems must be solved at an early age.

The majority of child patients are being treated with irremovable orthodontic apparatus, which causes minimal discomfort for the patient, are hygienic and don‘t interfere with function (chewing, speaking).

For the treatment, we use:

  • palatal expansion devices (apparatus);
  • tongue bands;
  • partial braces bands;
  • prophylactic devices, etc.

Most of these devices attach to the milk-teeth without damaging the enamel of the teeth and improve the state of oral hygiene.

Briefly about the treatment of children:

  • Orthodontic face mask – The purpose of this device is to stimulate the growth of the upper palate. This device commonly is matched with the palatal expander, which widens the upper jaw, pulling it forward and down.
  • Fast palatal expansion device – This device is used for expansion of the upper jaw, when the jaw is narrow and upper teeth are lacking space.
  • Palatal band – This is a band from a thick wire that stretches all through the palate and is fixed to the upper molar teeth. The purpose of palatal band is to keep and expand the band.
  • Tongue band – This is a treatment device used to make space for permanent teeth in the lower jaw.

Orthodontic plates for children – These are removable orthodontic devices. Removable plates are used only for those patients whose treatment lasts up to 3 to 6 months. Plates take a lot of space on the palate and under the tongue.  This may cause the position of the tongue to change.  By treating the occlusion anomaly with a plate, another anomaly may occur.

Tongue crib – This is prophylactic treatment device used to correct the position and function of the tongue. It mechanically closes the way for the tongue, preventing it from staying in between teeth. One of the common reasons for open occlusion is keeping the tongue between the teeth.
